New referees have trouble blowing the whistle loud enough. The idea is to get the players to stop when you blow the whistle. If they're not stopping - it's not LOUD enough.
So practice outside and get the idea what a whistle sounds like. As you progress in refereeing the whistle will have different sounds for different offenses. For now just get it loud.
I've been coaching, refereeing and watching soccer since watching Pele play in NJ. It is a great game for everyone.
I was the ball kid liason for the Chicago Red Stars first season. It is great to be on the field watching women play at a professional level. Let's make soccer in the USA as big a sport as it is in the rest of the world.
