Uefa- soccer

The president of Uefa - Platini said this about referees-
"These people are going to make mistakes and to be a referee I think you have to be a masochist."

So is that one of the reasons it's hard to retain referees in the first few years?

As the outdoor season comes to an end, remember to keep on exercising and eating healthy so your spring season will be great. Re-certify and be ready.

Happy winter

Cool Soccer

How many layers of clothes does it take to be outside doing soccer all day?
Oh about 6 should do it in IL on a very brisk fall day.

We had a referee call a kick back to the keeper. Got to love good calls.

Have a great week.

Chicago Red Stars

It was great to see a win last night against Philly by our CHICAGO RED STARS. They played so well and got to the ball with great speed and were so alive. It was great to be there and see women's soccer played so well. (WPS).

What a joy to see the center referee was a woman. We've come a long way in soccer and the climb is on the way up. More women referees, coaches and players make for a great game.

Happy Labor Day and a wonderful Fall soccer season.

What about the whistle?

New referees have trouble blowing the whistle loud enough. The idea is to get the players to stop when you blow the whistle. If they're not stopping - it's not LOUD enough.
So practice outside and get the idea what a whistle sounds like. As you progress in refereeing the whistle will have different sounds for different offenses. For now just get it loud.

Soccer Referees

Heat index here in Chicago is 103 today. Not the best day for training so wait until sunset and go take that run around the park. Drink lots of fluids all day long - water is best- and stay cool as you study the Laws of the game inside.

Prepare for Fall Soccer

The dog days of summer are almost over and we'll be ready to be on the pitch very soon for the fall season. Now is a good time to get out and run and exercise and stretch. Good stretching now will help in future games as you will be more flexible.
Also review the Law book and watch lots of soccer. MLS and WPS are only a short commute for some of us. Go and watch your local FIFA referees.

Referees

Referee training. The only good way to learn how to be a referee is to do many games a season. Volunteer or get paid but take many games to keep your skills up. Also talk to referees who are out there with you on the pitch. It's a great game and we need great referees.

Don't think it's easy to be a Fifa referee at this level or any level.

JOHANNESBURG -- Uruguay's Jorge Larrionda and Italy's Roberto Rosetti, whose blunders have prompted FIFA to rethink using video technology, have been left off the list of referees for the rest of the World Cup.

Larrionda failed to see an England shot cross the line in a 4-1 loss to Germany, and Rosetti wrongly awarded a goal to Argentina's Carlos Tevez against Mexico when he was offside.

Without giving reasons, FIFA announced the cut Tuesday.

Two more left out were Koman Coulibaly of Mali, who disallowed a third United States goal in a 2-2 draw with Slovenia, and French ref Stephane Lannoy, who harshly sent off Brazil's Kaka for a second yellow after Ivory Coast's Kader Keita ran into him while going for the ball.

Spring 2010 soccer begins

Well we've almost made it through the winter. It's snowing today in IL but that isn't surprising.
How is everyone doing on the certification test for USSF? See you on the pitch soon.
